Painting our Home White with Benjamin Moore

May 12, 2021

If you’ve ever had to choose white paint before, then you know it’s not as easy as looking at a colour chip, and you’re on your way.

White paint looks different in every house, in every room, and at every time of day. Yes, it was one of those pull your hair out of your head decisions for me. Did you watch my stories when I was going through the dreaded paint choices?

Well, hopefully, this post will save you a couple of headaches if you’re trying to find a beautiful white paint colour. Depending on your budget, this is something you want to consider… PAINT QUALITY MATTERS!

I knew I wanted a warm white in our house, mainly because the original plan was to paint our whole house the same colour. So with our designer, we chose White Dove (OC-17) by Benjamin Moore early on in the process. It’s a popular colour amongst designers because it’s a soft white with a hint of grey and it just looks very classic. It also looks beautiful on trim and cabinets, which we ended up using too.

When it came time to start the painting, our painter tested our paint colour in a kids room upstairs. I knew that paint looks different on walls than it does on trim, so we tested both. When I saw the sample in Taylor’s bedroom, I was disappointed because it looked so grey and yellow. It definitely wasn’t what I was envisioning, and I remember my heart sinking a little.

I didn’t know what to do because we had all settled on the paint colour quickly early on. I never predicted this would happen. I didn’t want this decision to affect the timeline of the build, so the pressure was on!

I called Benjamin Moore to talk about their paint colours because, at this point, I thought we needed to select a different white, and they told me that Benjamin Moore white paints are tough to match because most painters start with a grey/white base. Not sure if this is true or not, as I haven’t fact-checked this, but it made so much sense in our case. I then decided to get a sample of the actual Benjamin Moore White Dove paint in their Aura line, and it made all the difference.

Most painters choose a lower quality paint brand, because it’s more cost effective and mix the colour you want. This isn’t always the best route like we experienced. Like anything, quality lasts longer, and this is very true with paint too. When it comes to quality paint, a lot of the time, it goes on thicker, so you don’t need as many coats, which ended up being the case in our situation. So a gallon may cost more than a knock-off-brand, but you won’t need to buy as much, which makes a pretty big difference when you’re painting an entire house. You also have a piece of mind knowing the colour is precisely the way it’s supposed to be.

Benjamin Moore also has a line called Scuff-X, and the name pretty much says it all. It’s a super durable paint that protects your paint finish from dirty little hands and scuff marks. We chose this paint for crowns, frames, doors and base boards. Scroll down to the bottom for our full list of products.

Did you have trouble getting your cabinet paint to match the rest of the White Dove in your house? My cabinet guy uses lacquer based paint for cabinetry, and I’m concerned about this. Any suggestions?

Our cabinets were sprayed with a lacquer paint too. We had our cabinet maker do a sample door for us to match with all of our samples that we approved before he sprayed everything.

So beautiful! Would you mind telling me what color you used for the exterior of your home? It’s perfect! Thanks!

I’d love to know the exterior colors as well. So pretty!

Curious, what colors did you use for the bathrooms, and kids bedroom?

    • kristinelee June 30, 2021 at 5:37 pm

Kids rooms are Simply White and a few of our bathrooms (not all) are Chantilly Lace.

Can I ask whether your fireplace is painted? If yes, what color is it?

      • kristinelee October 26, 2021 at 10:06 am

It’s not painted. It’s made out of limestone and they antiqued it to have that warm/beigey colour.

Hi, I really love your floors. What is the name of the stain that you used?

    • kristinelee June 30, 2021 at 5:37 pm

Hi! Flooring details are in my Kitchen Blog Post. They are from Hakwood.

I’m doing my house white dove and trying to figure out the right stain for our hardwoods. I’m not sure what you mean that your floors are from hatwood. Do you know the color?

I am so curious which white you used for the kids room? I am in this white dove dilemma now.

    • kristinelee June 30, 2021 at 5:33 pm

Simple White was used in the kids rooms.

did you also do simply white for the trim or did you keep the trim white dove throughout? thank you!

Such inspiration! Loving your style 🙂
Where is the living room rug from?

You have a beautiful home. I have an office painted chantilly lace. We have a half fluted wall that I wanted to paint a similar color. Would you recommend simply white, white dove or white heron?
I don’t want it yellow but slightly different than the chantilly lace.
    Thank You

    • kristinelee August 18, 2021 at 1:19 pm

Hi! I’m not familiar with White Heron, but between the other two colours I think Simply White will work better with Chantilly Lace.

Where is your dining chandelier from? Xx

  • Heather August 18, 2021 at 1:07 pm

Thank you so much for this information! SOOO Helpful!
May I ask where you purchased your Benjamin Moore paint? Especially the ScufX and Ultra? We do not have a “Benjamin Moore paint store” Lowe’s says they can match exact, but I’m fearful of getting the “gray/yellow situation” you experienced as well.
Thank you so very much in advance!

    • kristinelee August 18, 2021 at 1:18 pm

Hi! Our painter purchased the paint for us, so I’m not sure where they went to get it. However, I’m pretty sure paint stores sell BM products. I would call around.

      Ace sells Benjamin Moore!

Beautiful!! Can I ask what stain colour you used for your beams?

  • Kristin August 26, 2021 at 8:14 am

What paint color did you use on the exterior? I’ve been trying to find it and I can’t. Thanks!

  • Jo-Ann September 4, 2021 at 9:11 am

Beautiful! And great pointer about the kitchen cabinets. I am looking at Chantilly Lace for the whole house. Wondering why you restricted Chantilly Lace to the bathroom (yes nice clean white for a bathroom) but did not use it in the rest of the house?

  • Angie September 20, 2021 at 8:07 pm

Can you please let me know the colors for your exterior? I can’t seem to find them. Thanks so much!!

  • Jane October 31, 2021 at 9:28 am

Is your foyer all White Dove? I love the look but the walls look like a different color. Beautiful house!

    • kristinelee November 2, 2021 at 1:11 pm

      Yes, it is!

  • Christine November 10, 2021 at 9:24 am

Did you use flat on the ceiling or eggshell?

  • Carolyn Brammer December 10, 2021 at 1:43 pm

We have built a cabin with wood ceilings. I keep reading that White Dove is the perfect color. I did buy a sample and just keep seeing yellow instead of just a warm depth. I did have the sample mixed a local paint store because the nearest BM dealer is 2 hours away. I also tried Chantilly Lace and even though it’s not as warm as I wish, it’s more neutral and not so yellow. Ugh. I hate trying to find a perfect white. How about Swiss Coffee mixed at 75%. I read that on a site. Any ideas?? Thank you.
